BARCELONA - 29 April 2026 - Two weeks ago, Barcelona served as the backdrop for the second network-wide training event of the EU-funded RESPIRE-EXCEL consortium. As a Marie Curie doctoral network, RESPIRE brings together a dedicated group of PhD students and supervisors to tackle the complexities of lung health, with a specific focus on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and asthma.

The event, co-hosted by Universitat deBarcelona, Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, and Omniscope, was a masterclass in the dual nature of modern TechBio: the pursuit of deep biological truth and the strategy required to make those truths actionable.

Mapping Inflammation

The scientific sessions kicked off withan exploration of the human immune system at an unprecedented scale. Prof. Holger Heyn and Dr. Laura Jiménez Gracia, PhD, presented their work on alarge-scale human inflammation atlas. By using single-cell resolution, they are uncovering the hidden patterns of how our bodies respond to disease, the kind of high-dimensional data that Omniscope specializes in interpreting to find meaningful health insights.

The Mindset of Protection

While much of the week focused on the "what" of biology, Omniscope CEO Vijay Vaswani led a pivotal session on the "how" of impact: Commercialization and Intellectual Property (IP).

In a field that rightly prizes transparency, the topic of IP can sometimes feel counterintuitive. However, Vijay’s talk moved away from dry legalities to focus on a necessary mindset shift for young researchers: the realization that not all research must be open access. He shared personal experiences on why protecting intellectual property is a fundamental step in the journey of any therapeutic or diagnostic tool. Without a strategy for IP, even the most groundbreaking research can struggle to find the investment and partnership needed to reach a clinical setting.

Why It Matters

At Omniscope, our mission is to turn the "noise" of the immune system into a clear signal for health and disease. But a signal is only useful if it can be heard by the people who need it most.

By participating in the RESPIRE-EXCEL network, we aren't just helping to map the immune drivers of lung disease. We are helping to equip the next generation of scientists with the tools to navigate the complex path from a laboratory insight to a commercial reality.

Omniscope is proud to support the RESPIRE-EXCEL consortium and contribute to improving respiratory health worldwide.
